Gazeta Polska, organ of the Foreign Office, declared in an editorial today that the situation of the 3,500,000 Jews in Poland could only be improved by emigration because “fifty per cent of the Jewish youths in Poland are vegetating.”
The statement came while Jewish circles were awaiting the results of conversations between Foreign Minister Josef Beck with Capt. Anthony Eden, British Foreign Secretary, in London at which the question of Jewish emigration was scheduled for discussion.
Stressing the Government’s interest in emigration, Gazeta Polska declared that the “passive attitude” of the Jews was not helping. It suggested that Jewish financiers abroad assist in expatriating Jews from Poland.
The editorial expressed the Government’s approval of a project broached by Vladimir Jabotinsky, head of the New Zionist Organization, for emigration of thousands of Jews annually over a period of ten years to Palestine.
It pointed out, however, that “there still remains the problem of finding new areas for Jewish emigration.”
Considerable significance was attached to the statement in political circles.
