Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty, President Roosevelt declared today in a message read by Mrs. Elizabeth K. Isaacs on a Joint Distribution Committee Purim program over Station WJZ and a National Broadcasting Company network. The President’s message follows:
“It is of happy significance that the Jewish women of America are celebrating this year the 150th anniversary of the American Constitution in connection with their commemoration of the Feast of Purim. The defeat of Haman’s plot to destroy the Jews in the faraway days of King Ahasuerus is one of the milestones in mankind’s long and bloody struggle to achieve freedom. This commemoration emphasizing at what cost and human sacrifice human liberty has been achieved should remind us that now, as always, eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.”
