Hamas and Islamic Jihad vowed not to put down their weapons, despite the Palestinian Authority prime minister’s call for an end to the armed intifada. The statement Wednesday followed more moderate statements before the Middle East summit in Jordan by senior Hamas official Ismail Abu Shanab, who said the group will end attacks on Israelis if it receives guarantees of a gradual Israeli army withdrawal from Palestinian areas.
