Hamas blamed Israel for the assassination of one of its top members in Syria. Izzadin Sheik Khalil, long on Israel’s list of terrorist fugitives, was killed by a car bomb in Damascus on Sunday. Khalil, 42, used to work for Hamas in the Gaza Strip and was then deported by Israel to Lebanon. He is believed to have been one of the people who trained Palestinian bomb-maker Yehiya Ayyash, who was killed in 1996 by an Israeli bomb.
