Hamas recognizes Israel and can hold talks with it, Egypt’s foreign minister said. “I am confident that Hamas recognizes the existence of Israel and I am confident that it is able to coexist with the idea of negotiations with Israel,” Ahmed Aboul Gheit, whose country has been a key Israeli-Palestinian peace broker, said in an interview published Saturday. “There’s no need to keep equivocating on this matter, especially since Hamas has already accepted a truce with Israel for the sake of negotiations,” he told the London-based newspaper Asharq al-Awsat.
