The Hamburg Chamber of Commerce has instructed all of its members to refuse to fill out questionnaires submitted by the Arab League boycott office requesting written evidence that certain German export firms were not Jewish owned, it was reported here today.
In a circular letter to its membership, the Chamber pointed out that, while considerable importance was to be attached to the development of Arab-West German trade, the requests for information were contrary to accepted international trade practices.
The action by the Chamber of Commerce here represented a departure from the previous German attitude, according to which, in the past, German trade associations simply transmitted the Arab demands to their members without comment. This, together with the fact that the Bonn Government never intervened against such practices, gave the impression that West Germany tacitly condoned the boycott.
