Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold, who returned here only yesterday from a six-week tour of Africa, during which he had conferred with United Arab Republic President Gamal Abdel Nasser at Cairo, plunged immediately today into the UN’s role in the latest flare-up of hostilities between Syria and Israel.
Mr. Hammarskjold was in close touch during the day with the UAR delegation and with the United Truce Supervision Organization headquarters at Jerusalem. Arab sources said that the UAR delegation was awaiting instructions from Cairo on whether to request a Council meeting. The Israel delegation this morning requested an early meeting with Mr. Hammarskjold.
