Israel had offered to contribute military units to the United Nations force in the Congo, but U.N. Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold rejected the offer so as not to irk the Arabs, the newspaper “L’Expresse” reported here today.
At the same time it was reported here today from Cairo that an airlift of more than 500 Egyptian paratroopers to the Congo began last night. They are to become a part of the United Nations forces there.
Mr. Hammarskjold, the Paris newspaper declared, yielded to the insistence of United Arab Republic President Gamal Abdel Nasser and finally accepted 500 U.A.R. soldiers “because he feared that, otherwise, Col. Nasser might undertake separate action outside the United Nations framework.” The newspaper points out that Nasser is now attempting to organize a separate “African Army” jointly with Ghana.
