A huge crowd overflowed a memorial meeting for the two Jews executed in Cairo yesterday which was held here last night under the auspices of the Zionist Federation of France. The meeting had the endorsement of all the important Jewish organizations in France. The speakers denounced the Egyptian Government.
French Foreign Minister Edgar Faure summoned the Egyptian Ambassador in Paris to his office yesterday and rebuked the Egyptian Government for its execution of the two Jews despite clemency please from many countries and individuals. M. Faure told the Ambassador that the French Government was “upset” by the hangings.
(The New York press severely criticized the Egyptian Government for the executions. The Herald Tribune, in an editorial, called them a “setback to orderly processes in the Middle East.” The Times expressed similar sentiments.)
