Supreme Court Justice Huilail Hansson of Norway will be named president of the Nansen Office at the forthcoming session of the League of Nations Council, it was reliably learned today. Hansson, who will succeed the deceased Prof. Werner of Switzerland in that post, was formerly a member of the Mixed Egyptian Tribunals.
The Council, which opens its session Monday under the presidency of Stanley Melbourne Bruce of Australia, will only discuss the temporary measure for the relief of German-Jewish refugees recently recommended by the committee of experts. The committee also made suggestions of permanent, assistance to refugees. Among the provisional measures recommended was the appointment of a prominent person who, with the aid of the technical departments of the League Secretariat, would undertake continuation of James G. McDonald’s work as High Commissioner for Refugees from Germany.
The Council, it was learned today, will probably appoint to Mr. McDonald’s post an outstanding English personality.
In League circles it was held doubtful today whether, in view of the urgency of the Italo-Ethiopian problem, the Council will discuss the persecution of German Jews. It is understood that debate on Mr. McDonald’s suggestions in this respect will be postponed until the League Assembly meets.
