Happy I Have Finally Been Able to Get to London Mr. Emanuel Neuman Says in Interview with J.t.a.: Co

I am happy that I have finally been able to get to London, Mr. Emanuel Neuman, the American member of the Executive of the Zionist World Organisation and the Jewish Agency, said in an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency here to-day.

Though I have been kept in close touch with the situation here and in Palestine by letter and cable, he went on, such information and exchange of opinions is, of course, not comparable with personal contact and discussion. I felt I could not leave America before the American Palestine Committee was actually organised and the campaign for the Keren Hayesed and Keren Kayemeth actually under way.

American Jewry has, of course, suffered severely and is still stunned by the blows it has suffered through the crisis, Mr. Neuman declared. However, our friends are carrying on, and will do their utmost to meet the requirements of the budget. Mr. Sokolov has been warmly received by the Jewish public. His meetings everywhere are crowded. Mr. Nahum Goldman is making an excellent impression; he is not only a splendid orator but a winning and magnetic personality.

JUDGE BRANDEIS TAKING AS DEEP AND KEEN INTEREST IN ZIONIST AND PALESTINIAN MATTERS AS EVER: MEETING IN WASHINGTON RESULTING IN FORMATION OF AMERICAN PALESTINE COMMITTEE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN AS IMPRESSIVE AND SUCCESSFUL BUT FOR JUDGE BRANDEIS’ POWERFUL SUPPORT AND CO-OPERATION: HE IS ALSO DEEPLY INTERESTED IN BRODIE PLAN FOR PRIVATE INITIATIVE AND MIDDLE-CLASS SETTLEMENT AND GIVING THIS WORK EVERY ENCOURAGEMENT

Justice Brandeis is taking as deep and keen an interest in all matters Zionist and Palestinian as ever. Indeed, in recent months he has been even more active than usual, though – as always – privately and modestly behind the scenes. The Dinner Meeting in Washington of January 17th., resulting in the formation of the American Palestine Committee could not have been as impressive and successful as it was but for the powerful and moral support, advice, and co-operation which Justice Brandeis gave me in my efforts through every stage of the affair. He is also deeply interested in Mr. Brodie’s plan for private initiative and middle class settlement and is giving this work every possible encouragement.

The American Economic Information Bureau, established in accordance with Mr. Brodie’s plan for Palestine, is already functioning, and we expect its personnel to be reinforced shortly by the arrival in America of an expert on Palestine in economic affairs. His name will be announced shortly. We are also prepared to establish an Economic Bureau in Palestine under competent guidance and supervision. The budget for these bureaus – on a modest scale to begin with – has been privately subscribed, I am happy to announce. With the two bureaus functioning this branch of Zionist activity will receive an added stimulus, particularly in the States, where there are many individuals and families with some means, who are anxious to find their way into Palestine. They are also developing there the Palestine Savings Groups, several of which have already been incorporated and are in full swing. I am firmly convinced that if these groups are multiplied they will provide a new and steady source of capital flow into Palestinian enterprises.

WE ARE LIVING IN A WORLD IN FLUX AND CONDITIONS ARE PARTICULARLY FLUID IN POLITICAL SPHERE: WITH PROPER PREPARATION WE MAY KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH ANY EMERGENCY THAT MAY ARISE: BUT UNITED FRONT IS INDISPENSABLE

I have spent a day and a half here, Mr. Neuman said, conferring with my colleagues on various aspects of the present Zionist situation. The time may soon come when our Zionist faith and fortitude may be put to the test. We are living in a world in flux, economically, politically, socially and in every other respect. Conditions are particularly fluid in the political sphere. It is a good sign that Zionist thought is not rigid but is alive and flexible. I have faith in the growing political awareness of our people and believe that with proper preparation we may know how to deal with any emergency that may arise. For this purpose a united front is indispensable.

Mr. Neuman further stated in the course of the interview that he has to-day received information from America that Vice-President Curtis and Senator Borah, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, have accepted the Honorary chairmanship of the American Pro-Palestine Committee, and that a third Chairman will soon be appointed representing the Democratic Party. Mr. Neuman on this occasion paid special tribute to Dr. Stephen S. Wise, who was particularly helpful in securing Senator Borah’s active co-operation in the work of the American Pro-Palestine Committee.
