Premier Moshe Sharett proposed today to Maj. Gen. Vagn Bennike, chief of the United Nations truce organization, a meeting to resume discussion of Israel’s hydroelectric project at Bnot Yaakov.
Israel halted work on the project pending the Security Council’s urgent consideration of the Syrian complaint against the work in the demilitarized zone but now feels it is free to resume work in view of the failure of the Council to take action as a result of the Soviet veto of the majority resolution. Israel, however, wishes to secure Gen. Bennike’s agreement to this step by removing his objections to the project by guaranteeing the rights of Arab landowners in the area.
