Abdul Sufi Hamid, Harlem’s “Black Hitler” who isn’t opposed to the Jews, but says at street meetings that he would like to “drive them out of Harlem” has the Negro section in a state of nervous excitement.
The latest development is a flourishing racket which has grown up as a direct result of Hamid’s efforts to force Jewish business men to hire Negro members of his Negro Industrial Clerical Alliance.
For an agreed sum, Negroes who are not members of the Alliance will “protect” storekeepers against Hamid, it was learned. Since they are unemployed, they hang around the establishment, and when one of Hamid’s investigators calls to find out whether the place is employing Negroes, the “protector” identifies himself as an employee.
One Jewish storekeeper, who asked that his name be withheld, yesterday admitted to the Jewish Daily Bulletin that he had availed himself of this protection. He said that many other storekeepers are doing the same.
