Sen. Fred Harris (D.. Okla.) a declared candidate for his party’s Presidential nomination in 1972, said yesterday that he favored supplying Israel with arms and helping it “exist as an independent state.” Harris made his statement in reply to questions on the NBC television program “Meet the Press.” He said his program would base foreign policy on idealism. Asked how that would apply to the Middle East conflict, Harris, a former National Chairman of the Democratic Party replied. “I think Israel is a democratic country which is supported by its own people and we have. I think, some obligation to help balance out the armaments there which have been supplied by the Soviet Union and help protect the right of Israel to exist as an independent state.”
