The American public, by three to one, rejects the Soviet-Arab position that Israel first withdraw its troops from all occupied territory before other issues can be settled, the Louis Harris Poll of Public Opinion discloses.
The poll, published today by the Washington Post, also revealed that seven out of ten of those polled believe Jerusalem should become an international city, open to all.
Eighty-eight percent said Israel should be guaranteed the right to send ships through the Gulf of Akaba; 86 percent felt that Israel should also have freedom of passage through the Suez Canal and 82 percent said they thought Israel’s existence as a sovereign state should be formally accepted by the Arab nations.
