Harrison M. Symes, a former U.S. Ambassador to Jordan, has been appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Congressional Relations, the State Department’s number two post in its liaison with Congress. Mr. Symes, a career foreign service officer, held many posts abroad, mainly in Arab countries. In 1963 he was deputy director of the Office of Near Eastern Affairs and subsequently served as director of Arab-Israeli affairs prior to his appointment to Amman. A native of Wilmington, N.C., Mr. Symes speaks fluent Arabic. His duties will be to maintain contact with members of Congress on foreign affairs legislation treaties and military sales.
