Harry Lashkowitz, Fargo, N. D. attorney, succeeded William Sultan, Chicago, as president of grand lodge No. 6, B’nai Brith at the closing session of the 63rd annual convention here. More than 300 persons from eight states and four provinces of Canada attended the sessions.
At the annual banquet on the opening day of the convention Rabbi Solomon Goldman, Chicago, spoke on “The Quest of the Jew”, stating that despite efforts at various times in their history Jews have been unable to become assimilated with the peoples of the counties in which they have lived, always retaining their own personalities. He pointed out that the quest of the Jews today is the quest for them to be themselves, which has resulted in their mightiest contributions to civilization.
More than 600 persons attended the banquet at which Milton P. Firestone, St. Paul, was toastmaster, and Dr. Bert G. Levin, St. Paul, president of the Minnesota lodge, presided. Other speakers included Mayor Bundlie of St. Paul, William Sultan, retiring president; Judge Gustavus Loevinger and Rabbi Harry S. Margolis, St. Paul.
Minnesota lodge No. 157 celebrated its sixtieth anniversary in connection with the convention. Other officers elected at the closing session were Sam Beber, Omaha, vice-president; Otto G. Felton, Chicago, secretary, and William Bensinger, East St. Louis, III., treasurer.
