A gift of $400,000 to Harvard University to study heart disease has been made in honor of Dr. Samuel A. Levine, professor at Harvard Medical School, the University announced this week-end. The gift, which will set up the Samuel A. Levine Chair of Medicine, was made by Charles E. Merrill, investment banker, who said in reference to his gift that he believed that Dr. Levine saved his life.
Dr. Levine, born in Lomza, Poland, in 1891, was brought to this country as a three-year-old child. He was a child prodigy, who worked as a newsboy throughout his elementary and high school days. He attended Harvard College and later its Medical School on a scholarship set up by the Newsboys Union. Later, he became a specialist in the treatment of heart disease.
