The sixtieth Hashomer Hatzair collective settlement, named “Magen” (Defense), was established in the Negev between Gevulot and Nirim today, in a sector not far from the Egyptian border on land that was reconquered from Egyptian Army units last year.
The majority of the 91 settlers are Rumanian Jews who, after reaching the shores of Palestine aboard the S.S. Atzmaut, were dispatched to Cyprus detention camps by the British. They later succeeded in proceeding to Israel via the Cyprus underground.
