More than 10,000 Hasidic Jews marched yesterday in a funeral procession here for Grand Rabbi Jacob Twersky, known as the Skverer Rebbe for the Ukrainian town where he was born, who died earlier in the day at the age of 68.
He founded the New Square Hasidic Village in Rockland County after leading his followers from Brooklyn’s Williamsburg section where the sect felt a more pious life could be led away from urban temptations. The village was incorporated in 1961 after a lengthy struggle with Ramapo town officials. The population of the village is about 700. The Grand Rabbi’s son, David, will become the new rebbe.
