Dr. Karel Stein, chairman of the Prague Jewish Community, resigned today following a request from the Jewish Action Committee that he sever all his posts in the Jewish community.
Dr. Stein’s a departure from Jewish public life represents a great loss to Prague Jewry. The consolidation of the Jewish community in this city immediately after the end of the war was accomplished largely through his efforts. In addition to establishing several welfare institutions for the benefit of Prague Jewry, Dr. Stein reorganized the Prague Jewish Museum, making it world-famous. He is expected to devote all his time now to the Zionist Organization here.
Karel Lists and his wife, Anna, today received 20 and 15-year prison terms, respectively, for denouncing Ludwig Popper, a Jew, to the Gestapo in 1942 for not wearing the prescribed yellow Star of David. Popper was subsequently deported to the Oswiecim death camp where he was killed.
