Hearings started here today on the Yugoslav Government request that Andrija Artukovich, former Minister of Interior of the State of Croatia established by the Nazis in Yugoslavia in 1941, be extradited as a war criminal who ordered the mass execution of Jews and Serbs when he was in power. The hearing is being held before U.S. Commissioner Theodore Hocke.
“We have the testimony of 100 eyewitnesses and documents signed by Artukovich condemning civilians to death, ” Yugoslav Consul General Branko Karadzole said. The Yugoslav Government contends that Artukovich ordered the executions of Jews, Sorbs and “enemies of the regime. “
