Some 200,000 dunams (50,000 acres) of wheat planted in the Negev are being written off as a loss by the Israel Ministry of Agriculture following a lengthy dry spell, it was learned here today. (In London, it was reported that the crop losses in the Negev would run as high as 4,000,000 pounds.)
The situation in northern Israel is not yet as bad, it was stated, but prospects for a bumper crop have faded. In an attempt to salvage some portion of the crop in the Negev, the authorities are preparing to turn livestock into the fields to use the shrunken grain for fodder.
