Heavy rains accompanied by a cold wave hit Israel, causing the loss of at least two lives, disrupting transportation over many roads as well as in urban centers, endangering the lives of 30 children in a day nursery, and sending ships to shelter in the protected harbor of Haifa.

The storms – worst of the season – brought a record 19-inch rainfall which was highly welcomed by farmers who said the waters would aid their winter crops. However, in the Sharon Valley, a mother and her infant child lost their lives when flood-waters washed them out of a jeep.

In Tel Aviv, firemen had to form a human chaim to rescue 30 children trapped in a day nursery. Four ships left Tel Aviv to take shelter in Haifa. This city and Metullah yesterday had their coldest day this season. Metullah had an unaccustomed snowfall. Form the Negev it was reported that flash floods raced down the mountain-sides, making road travel dangerous.
