The School of Oriental Studies of the Hebrew University joined with students and admirers of Persian poetry the world over in celebrating on October 26 the millenary birthday of the great Persian poet, Firdausi, who was born in 934.
A representative of the board of governors, members of the university staff and students gathered to hear two lectures, one delivered by Dr. S. D. Goiten on “Firdausi, the Poet,” and the other by Professor A. L. Mayer on “Firdausi and Persian Art,” the latter illustrated by larntern slides.
In an informal talk the same evening Professor Mayer described the Firdausi celebrations in Persia which he had attended as a guest of the Persian government. He spoke of the great changes brought about by the present Shah, the measures taken by the government to protect ancient monuments, facilities accorded to visitors and hospitality for foreign scholars in Persia and the improvements in roads and hotel accommodations.
