The annual convention of the National Association of Hebrew Day Schools concluded here with a resolution declaring that the Hebrew Day School movement has become “a vital force in the American Jewish community” and therefore deserves greater support from Jewish federations and welfare funds throughout the country.
The 300 delegates attending the convention were addressed by Benjamin A. Pollack, special assistant to U.S. Attorney General J. Howard McGrath, who declared that the Hebrew Day School can potentially change the spiritual contours of the American Jewish Community. Chief Rabbi Louis Rabinowitz of South Africa, who is now visiting the United States, told the convention that the Hebrew Day School is the “greatest hope for the future of American Jewry, which must decide whether it is merely living under the momentum of the past, or whether it has the power to perpetuate itself and survive.”
The number of Hebrew all-day schools in the United States is now 131, it was reported at the convention. They are located in 45 communities. The convention adopted a resolution paying tribute to the workers, teachers, students and parents who have helped to make the Hebrew Day School movement a success.
