An increase in the number of Hebrew day schools in the New York metropolitan area and in the rest of the country was recorded today as the new school year opened here. According to a report by Torah Umesorah, the national society for Hebrew day schools, about 50,000 students were enrolled in New York area Hebrew schools that provide religious and secular studies, an increase of three percent over last year. The organization estimated that the nationwide enrollment in such schools will probably reach 73,000 this year.
Five new Hebrew day schools were established in the New York area during the summer bringing the total to 170. Of these 110 are elementary schools and 60 are high schools. Outside of New York, 15 new day schools, including four at the high school level, were established in various communities of the United States and Canada. The nationwide total of such schools now stands at 361 in the U.S. and 43 in Canada.
