The Austrian National Library which has just celebrated its bi-centenary contains over 300 important Hebrew manuscripts, comprising three different collections: (1) the collection of Bishop Johannes Faber. consisting mainly of theological works and practically all sumptnously bound in old leather. (2) the collection of the famous orientalist, Tengnagel, who died in 1636, consisting of important manuscripts from Constantinople. Prague and Upper Italy and (3) manuscripts confiscated by the State after the expulsion of the Jews from Vienna in 1421. These last consist of works of theology, medicine, natural history, geography and history.

There are in the Library also 25 volumes of extremely rare incunabula.

The library contains, in addition, a large number of non-Jewish manuscripts in Hebrew bindings, the Hebrew manuscripts originally contained in them having apparently been destroyed.

A large part of the Hebrew manuscripts in the Library have not been touched for centuries and would afford a rich field for investigation.
