The Hebrew school of the Tarbuth Organisation in Soroca, which was closed down by the Roumanian authorities after the shooting outrage at Soroca, on the charge that the school was a nest of Communism, has now been reopened by order of the Prime Minister, Professor Jorga.
The Prime Minister’s action has given great satisfaction to Roumanian Jewry, which had protested against the closing down of the school and against the allegation of Communism made in respect of it.
The Soroca Tarbuth School was closed once before, in 1931, on the same charge, and was reopened after an investigation had disproved the charge. It was closed down again last January, after the Soroca shooting affair had created a feeling of indignation in the town. The Roumanian Zionist Executive protested against this action, pointing out that Hebraism is part of the Jewish national revival, which the Communist regime opposes, and that Hebrew is prohibited in the Soviet countries and Hebraists persecuted and exiled.
In February, the Chancellery of the Ministry of Bessarabia announced that the Under-Secretary of State for Bessarabia, had written to the Ministry of Education recommending the reopening of the Tarbuth School in Soroca, but Professor Jorga decided at that time not to act on the recommendation.
