DR. MORDECAI M. KAPLAN, ON LEAVE FROM THE JEWISH THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY OF NEW YORK, WAS INDUCTED YESTERDAY AS PROFESSOR OF THE PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION AT THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY ON MOUNT SCOPUS.

PROFESSOR KAPLAN, A LEADER OF THE SOCIETY FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF JUDAISM IN NEW YORK AND A FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE ZIONIST ORGANIZATION OF AMERICA, DELIVERED THE CONCLUDING ADDRESS AT CEREMONIES MARKING THE OPENING OF THE UNIVERSITY’S THIRTEENTH YEAR.

DR. JUDAH L. MAGNES, PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY, ANNOUNCED THAT THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT WAS CONSIDERING OFFERING A GRANT FOR ESTABLISHMENT OF A CHAIR OF FRENCH LITERATURE, AND ALSO TWO PRIZES.

ZALMAN SCHOCKEN, CHAIRMAN OF THE UNIVERSITY’S EXECUTIVE COUNCIL, ANNOUNCED THAT THE INSTITUTION’S BUDGET HAD BEEN BALANCED. THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS DID NOT MEET THIS YEAR BECAUSE OF THE POLITICAL SITUATION, HE SAID, ADDING THAT THE NEXT MEETING WOULD BE HELD IN PALESTINE.

DR. HUGO BERGMANN, RECTOR, REPORTED ON THE UNIVERSITY’S DEVELOPMENT AND GREETED THE NEW STUDENTS. THE ASSEMBLY ROSE IN MEMORY OF THE LATE THOMAS MASARYK, FOUNDER OF THE CZECHOSLOVAKIAN REPUBLIC, AFTER HE HAD BEEN EULOGIZED BY DR. MAGNES.
