The Jerusalem military court today sentenced Bernard Teitler, 28-year-old Hebrew University student from Germany, to seven years in prison for possession of explosives in his room. Sentence followed testimony by Teitler’s Jewish landlady contradicting his claim that the furniture in which the explosives were found did not belong to him.
Rector Abraham Fraenkel testified that Teitler was one of the most brilliant mathematics students in the university. Defense Attorney Goitein pleaded for leniency in view of the sufferings undergone by Teitler’s family prior to their emigration from Germany. The prosecution contended that the defendant was a “cat’s-paw covering up Jewish bomb makers.”
