Hebrew University is starting Israel’s first center for university graduate studies about Germany.

The Center for German Studies will open March 18, the Jerusalem school announced Thursday. It will offer master’s and doctoral programs focusing on Germany’s contemporary role in European and world affairs.

German Education Minister Annette Schavan and Ambassador Harald Kindermann will officiate at the opening.

Hebrew University beat out other Israeli universities to win a tender to form the new center, based on a 2006 initiative by the German Academic Exchange Service.

Other Israeli universities offering programs on Germany have focused mostly on the Holocaust and other elements of the country’s history.
