The Hebrew University of Jerusalem opened its new academic year here with a record enrollment of 3,150 students in its six faculties. Inauguration of the new school year was marked by special ceremonies attended by President Itzhak Ben Zvi and members of the Cabinet.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Edward Gelber, vice chairman of the University executive council, described the University as a vital instrument in serving the broader purposes of Jewish history. He also cited the recent Geneva meetings on peaceful uses of the atom, in which Israel participated, as an example of the scientific potential of the State and the University.
The ceremony also heard a review of the University’s progress during the past year by Professor Abraham Fraenkel, with particular reference to the setting up of its new division in the social sciences. The University today received an anonymous $10,000 contribution to be used for the construction of one room in the University’s projected library. The room is to be named for the late Stefan Zweig.
