The broadest possible educational and cultural basis is to be given the Washington Heights Music Center, new project under the auspices of the Washington Heights Y. M. and Y. W. H. A., according to an announcement from Samuel S. Solender, executive director. With Louis J. Caldor as program director the new center will serve not only Washington and University Heights but also Bergen County in New Jersey.
American-taught young musicians will be given free training in advanced orchestral technique under Max Weinstein, conductor who will organize the Washington Heights Symphony Orchestra. Community concert series are planned at nominal prices to establish scholarship and maintenance funds. Leading figures in the world of music are cooperating with the project. Free music classes for children and adults have already been inaugurated.
