Herman Fineberg, one of Pittsburgh’s foremost leaders in Jewish affairs, was unanimously elected today president of the United Jewish Federation.
In his speech of acceptance. Mr. Fineberg stressed the necessity of extraordinary giving to meet the critical needs of the Federation campaign at this time. He said that emergency philanthropic needs overseas, which have first call on funds being raised through Jewish Federations, must be met without sacrifice to Jewish community institutions at home.
“But,” he said, “a policy of first things is self-defeating if it means the community meets its responsibilities abroad by ignoring the needs of its own internal expansion. Federations are representative of the entire community and of a:., points of view in it and as guardians of the general welfare of all Jews everywhere they must take care of both aspects of the total Jewish need.”
