Heroic deeds of three Salonica Jews in the Greek war against Italy are reported by The Jewish Chronicle.
The well-known athlete, Albert, headed a handful of Greek soldiers in an attack on an outpost defended by a score of Italians. Armed with hand grenades, the men were instructed by Albert to make a terrific din in raiding the post. The Italians, believing they were surrounded by a superior force, surrendered to the Greeks.
Another Salonica Jew, Michael., shot down a low-flying Italian bomber with a rifle. The third Joseph Pepo, was decorated with the Military Cross for snatching up a number of hand grenades thrown at the Greeks by Italians and hurling them back at the Italian lines. Pepo sustained severe hand injuries.
