Jacob Meridor, leader of the Herut Party, today queried Premier David Ben Gurion, in the Israel Parliament, asking whether the government was acquainted with the status of the small and deserted island of Tiran, in the Gulf of Aqaba, near Elath, where no country’s flag has been raised.
Mr. Meridor also asked how the government would meet the danger of some power suddenly occupying the island and converting it into an “anti-Israel springboard.” Premier Ben Gurion replied that the island was not in the possession of the Israel Army and that, accordingly, the government saw no reason to discuss the matter.
