When thousands of Irish emigrants and descendants of Irish emigrants marched up Fifth Avenue today in the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade, one of those watching from the official reviewing stand was another emigrant from the Emerald Isle, Chaim Herzog, Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations.
Herzog was invited to attend the parade by its organizers, apparently because he was born in Dublin. His father, the late Rabbi Isaac Herzog, was Chief Rabbi of Ireland before he became Chief Rabbi of Israel: Rabbi Herzog was an ardent supporter of Irish independence and a close friend of the late Eamon de Valera, long-time Irish Prime Minister and later President.
