Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Chaim Herzog, expressed “the greatest of regret” today over Ambassador Daniel P. Moynihan’s decision to resign his post as U.S. Ambassador to the UN. “I regret the departure of a friend and of one who has succeeded in adding a new dimension to the UN, which gave promise of arresting the process of deterioration in the UN,” Herzog said in a statement to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
“His was the privilege of participating on behalf of the U.S. in the historic debate in the UN on Zionism and in the struggle against the evil forces which introduced the infamous resolution” equating Zionism with racism. Herzog said. He added that Moynihan’s part in that debate and his activity in the UN “have earned him the gratitude of the Jewish people and of the ordinary men and women yearning for personal liberty and freedom throughout the world.”
