Rudolf Hess, deputy leader of the Nazi party and Chancellor Hitler’s personal representative in all important party matters, is slated to succeed Franz von Papen as Vice Chancellor, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency learned on good authority yesterday.
Von Papen on Friday was appointed by Hitler as special Minister to Austria in a gesture of peace toward that country, torn by battles between Nazis and loyalists following the assassination of Chancellor Dollfuss.
The attitude of Hess toward the Jews of the Reich is an unknown quantity. Hitherto he has not touched on the Jewish question in any of his public utterances, one of which, bristling with harsh language against France, recently gained much attention.
German Jewry feels deep regret at the departure of Von Papen from the Vice Chancellorship, since he often intervened during his tenure of that office in an effort to calm excited situations involving the welfare of Jews.
