Dr. Fritz Bauer, the Attorney General of Hesse, offered today a reward of 20,000 marks ($4,760) for information leading to the arrest of Dr. Josef Mengele, the “selection” doctor at the Auschwitz concentration camp.
He said investigations conducted by the Frankfurt Prosecution office against persons involved in crimes at the Auschwitz camp had revealed that Mengele was still alive and last reported living in Argentina. The Argentine Government still has not replied to a request for Mengele’s extradition made by the West German Government in January, 1960.
Mengele disappeared from West Germany last summer shortly after the seizure of-Nazi Adolf Eichmann. The Bonn Foreign Office has since filed notices with the Governments of Brazil and Chile for Mengele’s extradition. A Jewish film producer, Artur Brauner, said in Berlin that he would offer a 10,000 mark ($2,380) reward for Mengele’s capture.
