The immigrant aid service of the HIAS-ICA Emigration Association will be considerably extended in 1937, it was announced today by HIAS, because of increasing economic discrimination and political oppression in Eastern and Central Europe with a consequent greater need for emigration.
John L. Bernstein, chairman of HIAS’ committee on work in foreign countries said that Poland, where the emigration association maintains offices in nine principal centers, occupies first place in increased allotments, with larger subventions also budgeted for Czechoslovakia and Rumania.
New offices have been opened in Colombia and Ecuador. The “transportation fund” established at the Jewish Migration Conference in Paris in 1956 is continued in the 1937 budget of HIAS with an increased allotment. The fund is used to enable Eastern European Jews to join their families overseas where immigration laws permit.
