Some 46,500 Jewish men. women and children will be assisted by the United Hias Service as part of the agency’s 1963 worldwide program, it was announced here today by Murray I, Gurfein, president of Hias. A total of $2,711, 200 will be spent by the agency during the year. Among the persons to be aided by Hias this year, 7,500 are expected to be migrants and refugees, almost 50 percent of whom it is estimated, will come to the United States. Most of the others will find havens in Canada, Brazil and Australia.
Other services to be provided by Hias in 1963 will include resettlement assistance to 300 migrants who arrived in Latin America in previous years; aid to 500 aliens in the United States; preliminary processing and counseling for 21,500 persons in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East; and pre-migration services to 10,500 relatives and sponsors of prospective immigrants.
Mr. Gurfein made his prognosis of planned 1963 activities preliminarily to the 79th annual meeting of United Hias Service, scheduled to be convened here March 10.
