More than 1,000 persons last night attended a banquet tendered Chief Rabbi Amram Blum by the Jewish community of this city in honor of his appointment as professor of the newly created Chair of Hebrew at Buenos Aires University.
Present at the affair were representatives of the Argentine Government, including: Dr. Carlos Diaz, deputy governor of Buenos Aires Province; Dr. Antonio Benitez, president of the Chamber of Deputies, and Dr. Enrique de Aldama, director of the Religious Department of the Ministry of Culture, who came as personal representative of President Juan Peron. Also present was Dr. Arieh Kubovi, Israel Minister to Argentina, and members of the legation staff. Speakers included representatives of the Zionist Council, DAIA, and the Buenos Aires Community Council.
Dr. Blum told the guests that the banquet actually represented “Argentine Jewry’s thanks to the Argentine Government for the creation of the Chair of Hebrew.” He noted that Gen. Peron had initiated the project because he had great respect for the ancient Jewish culture. Rabbi Blum stressed that the fact that President Peron had nominated a rabbi, rather than a layman, to interpret Hebrew culture, was a sign of the President’s “profound tolerance.”
