Phillips Talbot, Assistant United States Secretary of State for Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs, arrived here today for a four-day visit to Israel. He told newsmen that his Middle East trip was “primarily a study mission” designed to acquaint him closely with the area’s problems.
Mr. Talbot, who met today with Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, will confer tomorrow with Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, and will also meet with other high officials of the Government. Today, he toured the Galilee region, and also visited Israel’s project for diversion of Jordan River waters.
At the same time, a number of prominent United States members of Congress arrived here today for brief visits. Among them are Senator Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota, Senator Stuart Symington of Missouri, Senator J. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, Senator Ralph Yarborough of Texas. Senator Humphrey told correspondents here at a news conference that he has met with leaders of Arab countries and is more optimistic now about prospects of peace in the Middle East area than he was after his last visit to the region four years ago.
Other members of the U.S. Congress who arrived here today are: Rep. William G. Bray of Indiana, Rep. Alexander Pirnie of Connecticut, Rep. Ken Hechler of West Virginia, Rep. Hastings Keith of Massachusetts, Rep. Ben Reifel of South Dakota, Rep. W. Pat Jennings of Virginia, Rep. Clark MacGregor of Minnesota, Rep. J. Edward Roush of Indiana, and Rep. Ralph Harvey of Indiana.
