Sir Hugo Hirst, head of the English Electrical Company, was made a baron today at the King’s birthday honors. Sir Julian Cahn, philanthropist and sportsman, was raised to the baronetcy at the same time.
Sir Hugo is actively interested in Palestine and is associated with the Rutenberg concern for the development of power on the Dead Sea and elsewhere in the Holy Land. He was created baronet in 1925, and has long been interested in British government affairs. Since 1923 he has been member of the Board of the Trade Advisory Council, committee on unemployment insurance, committee on the British coal industry, and the British economic mission to Australia.
Sir Julian Cahn was knighted in 1929 for his philanthropic and public services. He founded several clinics and invalid homes. Sir Julian is known as a devoted cricketer, having captained an English team to Jamaica in 1929.
Moshe Smilansky, famous farmer-author, who settled in Palestine over forty years ago, was made an honorary member of the British Empire. Roy Godfrey Bullen Spicer, Inspector-General of Police and Prisons in Palestine, was made a commander of the Order of Saint Michael George. Mark Aicheson Young, former chief secretary of the Palestine government and now governor of Barbados, was made a knight commander of the order.
