The executive of the Histadrut, Israel’s Labor Federation, called an emergency meeting for next Thursday to consider growing joblessness in Israel. The Histadrut demanded that the Government adopt a crash program to curb increasing layoffs in industry and the building trades.
Berl Repetur, the head of the Histadrut employment committee, proposed a 100,000,000 pound ($33,000,000) fund to aid industry in development towns, joint Government-Histadrut funds to stave off additional unemployment and diversion of 70,000,000 pounds ($23,333,000) in building projects in new immigrant centers.
Secretary General Aharon Becker told the meeting that “there is no room for panic” and that there should be “concern and planning,” He warned against “political incitement” of the unemployed, declaring that such incitement could only reduce the morale of workers during the “present crisis.”
