A new book has made its appearance on the book stands in railroad stations and other prominent places in Germany containing a gallery of Jews. “In order that the outside world may know how considerate the German people are we have expressly noted, following the name of the person pictured, that he remained ‘unhanged’, ” the introduction informs us. “If, some time in the future, our descendants may find fault, because of a falsely conceived humanitarianism, with our seemingly harsh laws against the Jews then this book will present to them the pictures of those who drove their fathers to despair and destruction and they, in turn, will see to it that they protect their children from a return of Jewish dominance”, the preface concludes, patly expressing the book’s purpose.

The book is prepared with that same diabolical speciousness and cleverness so characteristic of Nazi propaganda methods, exploiting the laws of suggestion and mob psychology. It contains pictures of prominent Jewish personalities, many of them fine intellectual and spiritual types about which nothing derogatory or even conspicuous might be found. Included in the collection, and without giving the reason for their presence, are photographs of the German Catholic Erzberger and Adenauer together with several non-Jewish Socialists and radicals, for neither Karl Liebknecht nor Grzesinski are Jews or of Jewish descent. The vilification of the publication lies in the jumbled juxtaposition of these personalities and liberal and radical leaders with Jews who have gained notoriety as profiteers and grafters, with the purpose of confounding the indiscriminate reader to whom it appeals.

“So that everyone may see what devils in human form threaten Germany as a new Jewish hierarchy, we have brought their pictures together in this volume. And may the Jews of Germany themselves gain clarity by perusal of these pictures and come to realize how modest and grateful they ought to be for the true Teutonic patience and moderation with which they are being treated by the German people whom they tortured and whose Storm Troops they murderously persecuted for years”, proclaims the preface by Dr. Johann von Leers, who recently headed the German delegation to the Student Conference in Leyden Holland.

Cunningly the book classifies the Jews in six categories: Blood Jews, Lying Jews, Traitor Jews, Destruction Jews, Art Jews, and Money Jews. In the last classification, Jacob Wasserman, the author, is pictured presumably for the banker, Oscar Wassermann.

The text, which draws a red herring across these photographs, adequately keeps the promises of the preface. Only in one place, the “Juedische Rundschau” of Berlin, finds, is there a serious consideration of the real problem when the author declares that “the deep moral ailment of the Jewish racial body is traced back, by many scholars, to the lack of a real Jewish homeland”. Palestine isn’t large enough, the author proceeds, therefore other territory ought to be put at their disposal.” Even the most rabid anti-Semite is under the moral obligation before finally condemning this race, to give the Jews a fair chance to regenerate itself in this manner”, he writes amid a welter of Nazi agitation.
