Prediction that Germany will be plunged into a civil war in which Hitler and Hitlerism will be engulfed, in the event of the death of the Reich’s aged President von Hindenburg, was made today in an editorial in Lord Beaverbrook’s London Evening Standard.
The editorial reminds readers that it was Colonel von Papen, Vice-Chancellor in the Hitler cabinet, and who was presumably placed there by von Hindenburg as a check on the Fuehrer, who procured Hitler’s appointment as Chancellor. Von Papen was then and still is today, the Standard declares, behind von Hindenburg.
The Junkers, the once dominant group in Germany who are represented by von Papen, are becoming alarmed at the leftist movement of the Nazi storm troopers. If Hitler, the editorial states, satisfies one division of the storm troops, it is practically certain that the other will rise against him.
In any case, the newspaper points out, “an event like von Hindenburg’s death will be the signal for a conflict wherein Hitler and Hitlerism will disappear forever.”
