Open denunciation of the Jews as a leading factor in the Roehm revolt, which was suppressed by Hitler, Goering and Goebbels in a bloody purge that wiped out the lives of at least seventy-seven persons (by official admission of Der Fuehrer himself) was made tonight by Adolf Hitler in his widely-heralded accounting of the puppet Reichstag and the German nation.
“The consequence of the activity of these traitors,” Hitler thundered into the microphones in an international broadcast, “has become clear to the German people and has been recognized by the German workers that have found out these Jewish and Marxistic traitors and have overcome them.”
JEWS’ HOPES VANISH
With those words vanished whatever slim hopes German and world Jewry had entertained that the Nazi housecleaning might in some manner bring an alleviation of the campaign of hatred and extermination that has been directed against the Jews since Hitler came into power more than a year ago.
Leading up to what in many quarters is believed to be the keynote of his apologia for the June 30 blood-bath, casting blame for it on the Jews, Hitler detailed the events that led up to that fateful date. Then, for the first time since that bloody Saturday and the succeeding events that shocked the world, Hitler gave an official estimate of the number slain. He put these at sixty, stating that the other seventeen had died while at-attempting to escape arrest or in other ways than by execution. Of this number, the Jewish Tele-
